Translation
On the unforgiving heart
KKS XI: 522 less reliable / than figures sketched upon / the flowing waters / is this deep yearning for one / who does not return my love (Rodd 2017, pp. 198-199)
Resentment
Take the rocks as oneself, the human heart as a rocky coast battered by the waves of love
[just as] the heart is revealed in the riverbank’s autumn wind, and in sleeves overflowing with dew
there is a poem in which [Ono no Komachi declares] ‘I am not the guide to the villages where seafolk dwell…’* [the poet who] gazes upon the pine-thick bay can also be seen as the deeply aggrieved [lover] who gazes in wait [for one who does not come]
