Translation
Longing to see a certain lady in waiting at the palace
Tsurayuki
GSS XI: 704/705 we parted ways / without a token of farewell, but what / pains me most / is this journey back / into the watchful eyes of others
A woman once waited on a fickle man who, having had a change of heart, said to her, “if not for these many circumstances, I could have…truly, my heart was set on it…ah, but I did not call on you”—upon which she moved into a new abode to appear as if she had not been waiting.
The Woman
GSS XI: 705/706 dwelling somewhere / else now, I am moved to appear / to you as one unwaiting— / how varied are the homes / of my suffering heart
