Translation

Genji Monogatari XXXII Umegae: A Branch of Plum As he was preparing to leave to board his carriage, he was presented with a set of court robes that belonged to Genji, as well as two jars of incense that had not been tested the night before. He left with this poem: Going home with the sleeves of these fabulous robes / Suffused with the vivid fragrance of plum blossoms / My beloved will be suspicious and reprove me. (Washburn 2011, p. 613)

Genji, chapter 32 “Umegae: The Plum Tree Branch” His Highness [Hotaru] did not leave until it was really dawn. By way of gifts, Genji had him board his carriage with a dress cloak and a full set of robes of his own, and two jars of incense that he had left unopened. “With such sweet perfume wafting from such lovely sleeves, my darling at home may well have a word to say to reprove my sinful ways!” His Highness said. (Tyler 2001, p. 551)
