[年ごろはいとかくしもあらざりし御いどみ心を、はかなかりし所の車争ひに、人の御心の動き]にけるをかのとのにはさまてもおほしよらざりけり/かかる御物おもひのみたれに御心ちのなをれいなら/すのみおほさるれはほかにわたり給て御すほうな/とせさせ給ふ・大将殿きゝ給ていかなる御心ちにかと/いとおしう(く)おほしおこしてわたり給へりれいならぬた[ひ所なればいたう忍びたまふ。]

[toshigoro wa ito kakushi mo arazari shi onnidomigokoro wo, hakanakari shi tokoro no kuruma arasoi ni, hito no mikokoro no ugoki] ni keru wo ka no dono ni wa sa made mo oboshi yorazari keri

kakaru onmono omoi no midare ni mikokochi no nao rei narazu obosarureba hoka ni watari tamaite mizuhō nado se sasetamau ・daiyasu dono kiki tamaite ika naru mikokochi ni ka to ito oshu (ku) oboshi okoshite watari tamaeri rei naran ta[bidokoro nareba itō shinobi tamau.]

Translation

Genji Monogatari IX Aoi: Leaves of Wild Ginger
[she had always had a jealous, competitive streak, but until that absurd quarrel over the carriages had unsettled her heart, it had never been as pronounced as it was now, and she felt a degree of resentment] that no one at the minister’s household could have ever imagined. The lady knew, as a result of her confused emotions, that her condition was not normal, so she decided to undergo esoteric Buddhist healing rites. However, had to move out of her residence and have the rites performed elsewhere in order to avoid defiling her daughter, who was still preparing to be the High Priestess of Ise. Genji heard about her plans and, moved to pity as he wondered how she was feeling, went to call on her. Because she was not [at her usual residence in Rokujo, he had to be exceptionally discreet when he visited.] (Washburn 2011, pp. 190-191)
