Translation

Composed among poems about love
Takakura of Hachijōin
SSZS 1308 day after day, how / my love, it grows! so full / and verdant it must / be turning into the great trees / of Ukita’s sacred grove

The Cloistered Former Emperor Gyosei
SSZS 1309 when love grows / only in a single direction / it becomes / nothing but cruelty / and all the world a misery

The Daughter of Former Major Counselor Toshimitsu
SSZS 1310 they say that to love / one who does not return it / is karmic retribution— / fickle promises will echo even / into unknown worlds

SSZS 1311 punishment for a past / life is indeed sorrowful, but how cold / my love’s heart must / be to show such cruelty

SSZS 1312
no matter how cruel / or cold-hearted, I cannot forget / the one I love… / oh, heart, what / retribution could this be?
