Translation

KKS XVII: 905 it has been ages / since I first came to see you— / oh small twisted pines / on Suminoe’s sandy / shore how many years are yours
KKS XVII: 906 were they only men / I would ask the youthful pines / that line the shores of / Sumiyoshi how many / generations they have seen
KKS XVII: 907 smooth as a bow of / catalpa the beach where / small pines grow in whose / day were the seeds planted with / hopes for a thousand-year life (Rodd 2017, pp. 309-310)

KKS XVII: 905 Much time has elapsed / even since I first saw them. / How many ages / may the ancient pines have known / beside Suminoe strand?
KKS XVII: 906 Were they but human - / those ancient shore pines growing / at Sumiyoshi - / I would ask them to tell me / how many years they have lived.
KKS XVII: 907 Ancient pine standing / on the border of the sea: / during what era / might someone have sown your seed, / thinking of ages to come? (McCullough 1985, pp. 198-199)
